The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) for semiconductors is typically negative because as the temperature increases, the resistivity decreases. This behavior is different from metals where the resistivity increases with temperature. The reason for this opposite effect in semiconductors lies in the number of charge carriers (electrons and holes) present. As the temperature rises, more charge carriers are excited from their energy levels, reducing resistance.
