Schottky diodes are often referred to as hot-carrier diodes because they allow for the transfer of high-energy carriers (electrons) from the metal contact to the semiconductor. This phenomenon results in faster switching times and lower forward voltage drops compared to other types of diodes, but it also increases the likelihood of carrier degradation or damage due to the higher energy levels.
