In a Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO), the vertical plates form the deflection system that controls the vertical position of the electron beam, allowing it to be placed at different positions on the screen for each input signal cycle. The horizontal plates, on the other hand, control the time base or horizontal sweep of the electron beam across the screen. This enables the CRO to display changes in voltage over time.
