"Zener breakdown occurs in a diode when the reverse bias voltage exceeds a critical value, causing a controlled and stable flow of current. The diode operates in a region where the current increases exponentially with the applied voltage, and the voltage drop across the diode remains relatively constant. Avalanche breakdown, on the other hand, occurs when the electric field within the device becomes strong enough to cause the acceleration of electrons to high energies, causing an uncontrolled increase in current and a rapid rise in voltage. Unlike Zener breakdown, avalanche breakdown is undesirable in most electronic circuits as it can cause damage to the component"
