The terms forward resistance (Rf), static resistance ( Rs ), and dynamic resistance ( Rd ) are used to describe the behavior of a pn-junction diode under different conditions. Here's an explanation for each:
1. Forward Resistance (Rf): It is the voltage-to-current ratio in the forward-biased condition, measured between the terminals of the diode. In other words, Rf = Vf / If, where Vf is the forward voltage drop and If is the forward current.
2. Static Resistance (Rs): It is the resistance of the diode under reverse bias, measured from anode to cathode. When the diode is reverse-biased, it behaves like an open circuit with infinite resistance. However, in a perfect diode, the static resistance would have a finite value. In practice, most real diodes exhibit a high but non-infinite Rs due to leakage currents.
3. Dynamic Resistance (Rd): It is a more complex parameter that describes the diode's behavior during switching and transient conditions. Rd can be calculated as dVf/dI, where Vf and I are instantaneous values of the forward voltage drop and forward current respectively during the transition from reverse bias to forward bias. Dynamic resistance helps in analyzing the speed at which a diode can switch between forward and reverse bias.
