Different methods for starting a synchronous motor include: direct-on-line (DOL) starting, star-delta starting, auto-transformer starting, and soft-starter starting. DOL starting involves connecting the motor directly to the line voltage; star-delta starting uses a delta connection for starting and a star connection for running; auto-transformer starting reduces the voltage applied to the motor during start-up; and soft-starter starting gradually increases the voltage and current to the motor over time, reducing the inrush current.
