The Indian Police Force operates under a hierarchical structure, reflecting its rank-wise chain of command. Starting from the lowest rank, Constable is the basic entry level officer, followed by Sub-Inspector, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Superintendent of Police (SP), Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Director General of Police (DGP). At the top of this structure, the Home Minister of India holds the highest authority over all state police forces and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
