What if I even have associate existing db instance that i’d wish to cover with a reserved instance?

To associate an existing DB instance with a Reserved Instance, you would first create or select a Reserved Instance in the AWS Management Console, CLI, or API. Then, you would modify the DB instance's database options and specify the Reserved Instance ID.
