The Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem states that to accurately reproduce a signal without loss of information, it must be sampled at a rate greater than twice the highest frequency contained in the signal. This means that for an audio signal with a maximum frequency of 20 kHz, a minimum sample rate of 40 kHz is required.
