What is a hash function? What is a message digest?

Answer Posted / Avinash Pandey

A hash function is a mathematical algorithm that maps data of arbitrary size to a fixed-size string, known as a hash or message digest. The output (hash value) has no inherent meaning but serves as a compact representation of the input. Collisions, where different inputs produce the same hash, are unlikely but possible.
