The term 'bot' originated in the 1990s from a chat bot named IRCbot created by Chris Wood for Internet Relay Chat (IRC). The original IRCbot is no longer actively maintained but has been influential in the development of modern chat bots. Today, various open-source and commercial chat bot frameworks are available.
