Neutral, ground, phase, earthing, and shielding are all related to electrical systems but have distinct meanings:
- Neutral (N) is a conductor that carries current back to the power source, returning it to complete the circuit. In a three-phase system, there are typically three neutral conductors.
- Ground (GND or Earth) is a reference point for electrical potential in an electrical circuit, usually at zero volts. It provides a path for electrical current to flow safely to the earth during fault conditions.
- Phase (L1, L2, and L3) refers to the three alternating currents of different frequencies and phases that make up a three-phase power system.
- Earthing (also known as grounding) is the process of connecting exposed conductive parts to the earth or ground potential to prevent electrical shock and ensure safety.
- Shielding refers to the protective measures used to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) in electronic devices.
