List out the main responsibilities of the network layer.

Answer Posted / Gopal Krishna

The network layer, also known as the Internet Layer in the TCP/IP model, is responsible for delivering data between networks. Here are its main responsibilities:

1. Logical addressing: Assigning unique addresses to devices on a network and routing packets based on these addresses.
2. Routing: Choosing the best path for data packets to travel from source to destination based on current network conditions such as traffic load, distance, and network congestion.
3. Fragmentation and reassembly: Breaking down large packets into smaller fragments if they are too large to be transmitted over a link or network, and reassembling them at the destination.
4. Error detection and recovery: Detecting errors in data packets and taking corrective action such as requesting retransmission of corrupted packets.
