In RPG/400, SFLNXTCHG is a built-in function used to retrieve the next sequential number from a sequence file. This is useful for generating unique ID numbers for records in a file. A real-time scenario where this might be used is when generating order numbers for customer orders. The SFLNXTCHG keyword would be used in combination with an OPEN and CLOSE command to read the next number from a sequence file and assign it to a new record. In RPG/400, the mandatory specifications using programs are the D specification (declaring variables) and the O specification (opening files).
