Increasing the number of protons in an atomic nucleus leads to a change in the atomic number, resulting in a different chemical element. The addition of electrons determines the electric charge of the atom. However, increasing the number of electrons within the same energy level or shell can cause changes in the properties of an element due to differences in electron configuration and the formation of new covalent bonds.
