Explain Circuit Breaker Trip Characteristics in detail.

Answer Posted / Amit Kumar Tamrakar

Circuit Breakers are essential safety devices used to protect electrical circuits from overcurrent, overload, and fault conditions. Their trip characteristics define how they respond to these abnormal conditions.

1. Instantaneous Trip: This setting operates immediately when the current exceeds a predetermined level (usually 125% of normal rated current). It is used to protect against short circuits.

2. Time Delayed Trip: This setting provides protection against overloads and single-phase faults. The breaker takes some time (ranging from fractions of a second to minutes) to trip after the current exceeds a certain level.

3. Inverse Time Trip: This characteristic offers more selectivity in fault protection, especially for three-phase systems. The time delay increases as the magnitude of the overcurrent increases.

4. Restricted Earth Fault Trip: This setting is used to protect against earth faults. It operates at a lower level than the instantaneous trip but higher than the inverse time trip.

5. Backup or Differential Trip: This function monitors the current flowing through each phase of a circuit and trips if an imbalance is detected, indicating a single-phase fault or ground fault.
