RMS value (Root Mean Square) is used to express the effective or operating value of an alternating current (AC). It represents the direct current (DC) equivalent that would produce the same power. The effective value or RMS value is important because most electrical devices are designed to operate with DC, and AC needs to be converted to DC for these devices.
