IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water. The 'X' in IPXY means that the device has no specific protection against solid particles. The 'Y' is for the protection against liquids and it varies based on the rating (e.g., Y1 denotes protection against vertically falling droplets, Y2 – dripping water, Y3 – spraying water, Y4 – splashing water, etc.).
