1. Power Factor (PF) is a measure of how effectively electrical energy is being used in an AC circuit. In Nigeria, the typical power factor for industrial and commercial customers is around 0.9 lagging due to the dominance of induction motors and other inductive loads.
2. An alternator converts mechanical energy into AC electricity, while a generator converts mechanical energy into DC electricity.
3. Generation of power occurs at various voltage levels (kV), but transmission lines are rated in MW to indicate the total amount of power that can be transmitted over long distances.
4. To increase the transmission capacity from 20,000MW to 80,000MW, you would need to:
a) Build more power plants to generate additional electricity.
b) Upgrade existing power infrastructure (transmission lines, substations, etc.) to handle higher power levels.
c) Implement smart grid technologies to optimize the distribution and usage of electricity.
