Engineering stress (σ) is the stress applied to a material, calculated by dividing the applied load (F) by the original cross-sectional area (A). True stress (σ_true), on the other hand, accounts for the fact that the cross-sectional area changes during deformation. It is calculated by dividing the applied load by the instantaneous deformed cross-sectional area.
