A Finite State Machine (FSM) is a mathematical model describing the behavior of a system as it transitions between states based on inputs. A Hierarchical Finite State Machine (HFSM) extends this concept by organizing states in a hierarchical structure, allowing for more complex and modular state management. An example of functionality that can't easily be replicated in a non-hierarchical FSM is a menu system where submenus are nested within each other. In such a case, a HFSM would allow you to manage the transitions between the main menu, submenus, and their items more efficiently.
