What is upsampling and downsampling?

Answer Posted / prabhakaran

Upsampling and downsampling are two fundamental operations in digital signal processing, particularly in the context of resampling or changing the sampling rate of a digital signal.

Upsampling, also known as interpolation or upscaling, is the process of increasing the sampling rate of a digital signal. This involves inserting additional samples between the original samples to create a higher-resolution version of the signal. Ex. image resizing, audio sample rate conversion, and signal reconstruction.

Downsampling, also known as decimation or subsampling, is the process of reducing the sampling rate of a digital signal. This involves discarding some of the samples while retaining others.Examples audio compression (e.g., MP3), image compression (e.g., JPEG), and data reduction in general.
