primarily it offers safety from step and touch potentials to the operating personnel while there is a short circuit in the system and the fault current flows back to its source.it also an impediment for the reptiles to crawl and climb on the equipment and also retains the moisture content of soil to some extend and there by the resistivity of the soil kept at low so as the fault current will flow to earth at ease.weed growth is also prevented.
