Core is only used for reduce the losses, because when we provide power supply on primary coil, after some time heat loss will occurs in both windings, and to reduce the heat of windings we de iron loss.
And the heat of the windings transfer in iron core and both windings are safe.
And for reduce the iron loss we use some cooling techniques, I.e. oil, ducts, fan etc.
That's why transformer also safe.
NOTE:- Transformer can be design without any core but losses will more occurs and windings can melt.
