mechanical efficiency is high in petrol engines compared to diesel engines but why diesel engines are preferred in heavy duty vehicles

In case of heavy vehicles, more torque is require. More torque comes from larger stroke and large stroke means high compression ratio. Diesel engines have high compression ratio. For same temperature and pressure, diesel engines are more efficient.
