Column is a compression member, concrete is strong in compression..then what is the reason to the column reinforcement..?
Answer Posted / hasnain abbas
In column generally two types of reinforcement are provided i.e. Longitudinal Reinforcement and Transverse reinforcement (lateral ties or Stirrups)
Purpose of Longitudinal Reinforcement is to
1) Assist Concrete in resisting compression (here by using reinforcement we are able to reduce the size of column)
2) To resist tension which may arise due to eccentric loading or transverse load or moment.
Purpose of Transverse Reinforcement is to
1) Hold Longitudinal Reinforcement in place
2) to arrest the cracks
