What is the purpose of a turning gear?

Answer Posted / anbu

The purpose of turning gear is to rotate the shaft to designed min rpm, when the turbine is in shutdown condition. It is used to avoid eccentricity formation due shaft bend or uneven temperature occur ( may be cool in the bottom side) in the shaft. To overcome this, the shaft should not in ideal state. So, some external source is required to rotate the shaft that is turning gear.
