the exciter coil of alternators fails due to
1)when the diode plate not properly work at the back of alternator which is connected to compound wound generator rotor.(the exciter field coil connections of alternator are connected to compound wound generator rotor).
2)and major reason is AVR failures also.
To avoid these failures of components maintain equal and correct load on each phase of the generator.
and avoid loose connections at the diode plate terminals.
