How a oxygen sensor & analyzer work at boiler or furnace,
what’s the principle & science is beyond this, How O2
sensor scene & convert signal & move toward analyzer &
analyzer show reading in percent?

Answer Posted / carl_ellis

A zirconium oxide, ZrO2, (zirconia) sensor provides a signal
when the ZnO2 element is heated to a minimum temperature,
316 Deg C. The low level mV signal range is approx 200mV to
800mV. The low level signal is linearized and characterized
as percent oxygen in a transmitter and retransmit as a
4-20mA signal.

The signal is used to monitor and control excess air in
combustion of the fuel. A small amount of excess air
indicates complete combustion of the fuel; too much excess
air wastes heat by consuming the produced BTU to heat air
that goes up the stack. An absence of excess air could
indicate unconsumed fuel going up the stack.

The heat treat industry uses ZrO2 probes with PID
controllers that deal with the O2 concentration signal and
the probe temperature in a mixture of gases containing
carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen as dewpoint
temperature or 'carbon potential' in carburizing applications.
