Reasons for using seal pots:

Answer Posted / carl_ellis

A seal pot has had two major uses:

a) a seal pot is intended to protect primary instruments
like pressure gauges, pressure or differential pressure
transmitters from the attack by the chemically agressive
medium being measured.

b) Seal pots have been used for differential pressure flow
measurement of low viscosity oils at high temperature where
cooling in the impulse tubing causes the liquid medium to
cool, become more viscous and to make the meter response
sluggish. By using a lighter, less viscous oil on the top
of the heavier, more viscous measured medium, all contained
in a seal pot that transmits the impulse tubing pressure to
the top of the seal pot, measurement response can be improved.

A test cock installed in a horizontal port tap is used to
establish the level of the heavier fluid (fill until it runs
out the cock) because the seal pot levels of the heavier
fluids must be at a known elevations in order to maintain
the transmitter's zero. A fill cock on the top of the seal
pot allows the light top fluid to be filled over the heavier
fluid.

High and low side sealing pots are generally connected very
close to the pipe.

The challenge is finding media that are compatible yet will
not mix and dilute one another.
