in india,we use 230V,50 Hz,whereas many other countries use

Just 2 points about the above answers.
1 - 110 is sufficient to cause electrocution and therefore
is not safer that 230 volts.
2 - while it is true that 230 volts will require smaller
cables as the current is about half for the same power as
it would be for 110 volts. It is not true that 230 is used
only in third world countries because it is cheaper and
life is not as important.
North America uses mainly 110 for domestic uses. In all of
Europe 220 volts is the normal voltage. Japan is one of the
few Asian nations which use 110. Most of Africa and the
South Pacific use 220 to 240 volts. South America use a
mixture.
