What is AVR in Turbo generator in Thermal power plant?
Answer Posted / d oldham
The synchronous generators used do not naturally operate at
any particular voltage but the voltage can be adjusted by
manually setting the excitation. However as soon as any
load is put on the generator a different value of
excitation is required. The AVR automatically makes the
necessary adjustment by closed loop control to keep the
generator voltage constant. The operator can manually
adjust the AVR reference to allow connection to a power
system. Once connected to a large power system the AVR
setting determines the reactive power load kVAR on the
generator. A high setting exports kVAR (lagging power
factor) and a low setting imports kVAR (leading power
factor).
