merely seeing it(without pressure gauges)...

even simple than all the above mentioned procedures just pass a light through the pipe
i mean torch it with ur cell phone
u will see the light will get dispersed in the dirn of motion of fluid
u might also see the particles motion n thus determine the flow direction
