Plate load test is a test carried out at the site to determine the allowable bearing capacity of the soil.A plate of size 0.3 to 0.6m of 25mm thick made up of steel is used. The plate may be square or circular in shape. The pit of size 5 times the size of the plate is excavated to a depth of foundation. A central hole is excavated in a pit on which the plate is placed. With a hydraulic jack, the seating load of 7kN/m2 is applied on the plate. Then the load is applied in increments and settlement is recorded. Then the graph between load intensity and the settlement is drawn, from which the bearing capacity of the soil can be determined by using formula.
