because of this two reasons..
1)transformer works on principle of electromagnetic
induction...
hense,there is no change in the voltage source with respect
to time so, there won't be induced of emf in either of the
coil...
and so there won't any output appearing on the secondary..
EFFICIENCY=0
2)if the DC suppluy is given the there may be POSSIBILITY
OF THE SATURATION OF CORE MATERIAL WHICH MAY CAUSE DAMAGE
TO TRANSFORMER...
hence for dc supply transformer can not work,
and for just testing purpose only dc supply is given up to
certain ranges..
