why transmission lines traveled in high voltage?
Answer Posted / arunraj
Because to minimise power loss while transmitting.
For example: If power of 1000watts has to be transmitted to
certain distance through transmission line having a
resistance R ohm.If it was transmitted at 200volt, the total
power loss in transmission is
power=VI=1000watts
current=power/voltage=(1000/200)=5 Amps
power loss=(I*I*R)=5*5*R=25R watts
If it was transmitted at 2000 volts,
I=1000/2000=0.5 Amps
power loss=(0.5*0.5*R)=0.25R watts
now we can see that at high voltage transmission line
current is small. so we can use conductors with small
thickness instead large bars.
