Q : How to calculate cooling water pumps head, do I need to
consider static head and frictional loss of the pipe with
high elevation? I mean to say is discharge pipe branches to
several elevations and joins to the cooling water return
line.
The highest elevation pipe goes to a heat exchanger at (xx)
psi inlet pressure. Should I consider only pump discharge
header and this piping for head calculations?
How about frictional losses in return pipe? Pressure
recovered in return piping is good enough to make it back
to the cooling tower?

Pump Discharge Pressure = Max. Discharge static head (pump
discharge nozzle to max. pipe elevation routed)+ max.
discharge pipe length friction loss (including supply &
return pipe line to/from heat exchanger to cooling
tower)+pressure losses in no of valves & fittings (isolation
valve, control valve, bends, expander, reducer, T joint )+
pressure losses in no of equipments like heat
exchanger(condenser)+ exist loss in cooling tower
Note: no need to consider all branches pipe line for total
friction losses. consider max. branch pipe length & do not
forget to cross check that calculated pump discharge
pressure is enough sufficient to meet pressure requirement
in remaining branch pipe lines.
