piston rings are used for the following purpose
1. to prevent the leakage of the highly compressed charge
from cylinder to crank case.
2. to provide lubrication from the oil rings.
3. contact area between rings and cylinder is minimum as
compare to piston and cylinder so it reduce the friction
becoz of minimum area of contact.
4. price of piston is much higher than the rings, so it
reduces the maintance cost of the engine.
