how will we know, without opening anything, that an engine is 2S or 4S ?
Answer Posted / marine engineer
There is a great confusion between the answers as i have
mentioned before that BY ARRANGEMENT OF THE VALVES is
applicable only for modern MARINE diesel engines as it is a
marine engineering web page whereas the answer which
mentions that no valves are situated in 2S engines is
applicable for smaller engines may be when at the times of
SIR RUDOLF DIESEL BUILT ONE or a yamaha rx 100 bike engine
...the exhaust valve of marine enine is operated by means of
servo oil which is mechanically controlled by cam
arrangement or computer controlled in ME type of
engines....also the basic thing for identification is that
2S engines are big and 4S engines and smaller of comparative
power...again if you want to go further than try and have a
look at the flywheel >>> that is >>>a 4S engine flywheel
will be bigger than the 2S flywheel as power is stored at
every rotation of crankshaft whereas it is every 2 rotations
in case of 4S engine...also marine engines are of crosshead
type i.e a crosshead is provided whereas in 2S the same work
of taking transverse load is done by piston skirts in 4S
engine...i guess this is fine...any doubts about marine
diesel engine???
