Active earth pressure: In this case soil is fully active.
i.e., soil is giving the pressure to the wall.
Passive earth pressure: In this case wall is fully active.
i.e., wall is giving the pressure to the soil.
Effect:
Active case: the wall is move away from the earth fill
Passive case: the wall is vice-verse to the active case
