It’s possible to buy and sell the same stock several times
within a day, unless the stock is in the trade-to-trade
category. Hence, you can settle only your net outstanding
positions at the end of the day. If you buy 500 IBM shares
and sell 250 shares, you will have to pay only for 250
shares at the end of the settlement.
