in VSS, what is meant by check out and check in?

For testing environment, if you need to change any
documents in vss, first you have to check out the document
from VSS, open the vss,right click on the document,you
should be find out check out option,then click the check
out.VSS will ask the address,where you need to store the
file.Then you change it.
chenk in means,when ever you check out the file or document
from vss,on that file appearing one red symbol,that means
already check out.right click on that file, you should be
able to find check in option(This time it is enabled).then
clink on that check in option. then, same previous file
will be moving to the VSS.
