Water Hammering in case of turbines may be explainedas:
Turbines are operated at four levels 1.) 1/4 throttle 2).
1/2 throttle 3.) 3/4 throttle 4.) full throttle.
when the valve opening opening in the turbine is suddenly
closed the water coming in from the penstock makes an
impact on the shutter which is closing the gateway. as a
result of this a back pressure is set up in the pipeline.
The phenomenon of water impacting on the valve shutte in
known as Water hammer.
All suggesstions welcome I am not sure about steam but
common sense says that in steam pipeline the phenomenon be
the same only that fluid be replaced with steam
