I think it is the system to protect the instruments from ambiant harms like dust, water, humidity, temperature etc which is called INGRESS PROTECTION (IP)in now days and was called previously.Every instrument has its protection standard from its factory manufacturer according to its usage area like in open atmosphere, acidic or chemical environment or poring water area. It is the safety of electrical electronically parts of instruments.
