What is meant by Active and reactive power?

we generally classify losses as resistive and reactive losses
1.we know resistance of a material is its characteristic which indicates how efficiently a material can conduct electrons
->there fore now we can say a certain portion of energy has to be spent to over come this resistance hence called resistive loss.
now any electric equipment we use will just convert electric energy to required form say mechanical in case of motor, heat in case of heater etc.,
now if the equipment used involves in reactive components say inductance or capacitance
we know a magnetic field will build up around a conductor carrying electricity
similar to resistance in case of electricity we have term magnetic permiability which indicates how efficiently a medium can carry magnetic field
now for building up of magnetic field around a conductor certain amount of power should be spent to over come magnetic resistance of medium mostly air..
-->now active power is the sum power which is used to produce real work and power consumed for resistive losses
-->and reactive power is power which is used to set up the magnetic field, electric field that power required for compensating magnetic losses which are predominant in inductive load........

I'm generating a pulse of 3V with frequency 80Hz (12.5ms time period) and pulse duration 0.125ms and feeding it to a transformer since i want the pulse to get amplified around 60V. At the output amplification s happening but the pulse is changed to a spike, can you tell me what could be the reason? (an ordinary transformer 220V-12V stepdown transformer is reverse connected ie. now it is 12V-220V stepup and voltage amplification happens)
