What is meant by water hammering in steam line?why it is
happening and how to overcome the same?

Answer Posted / santosh raikar

as the bad insulation or radiation heat transfer
condensation takes place in steam pipes. due to the
condensation water vapors accumulate in pipes, if these are
not separated/removed from the system, hammering takes
place. this is due to the density difference b/w steam and
water vapor there by difference in flow rate. this
difference flow rate causes resistance and sudden hammering
takes place.
to overcome this proper insulation to be provided, the
sloping of 12mm to 3 mtrs of pipe to be provided and the
most imp is proper type of steam trap to draining the
condensate.
