A resistor, inductor and capacitor are connected in series
respectively.Voltage across resistor is 40v,across inductor is
70v,across capacitor is 100v.Then what is the total voltage
applied across the elements?

sai phani kumar answer is correct.
Current flow will be same in all the elements. so
calculation should be done with reference to current.
Voltage across resistor Vr= 40+j0
Voltage across inductor Vl= 0+J70 (Since volage leads the
current by 90 degress)
Voltage across capacitor Vc= 0-J100 (since voltage lags the
current by 90 degress)
Total voltage = Vector sum of Vr + Vl + Vc
= 40+j0 + 0+J70 + 0-J100
= 40 - j30
Magnitude of voltage = 40-j30 = 50Voltage (with 38.6deg lag
to the current)
