You have to design a machine component. For what type of
failure (ductile or brittle) you will design?
Answer Posted / arpit srivastava
It depends on material to material.
Some materials dont have elastic limit, i.e. they undergo
sudden failure like cast Iron.
It also depends on loading conditions, cyclic loading,
creep loading etc. because of which material does not shows
any sign prior to failure.
Hence it cant be taken as hard and fast rule as to design a
machine component. For what type of
failure (ductile or brittle)?
For instance Factor of safety also varies from one
application to other.
