earth instead of neutral. the bulb will glow or not? if yes
then what is the need of neutral?

Generally all the distribution transformers have Primary
DELTA and Secondary STAR connection. The neutral of the
STAR is grounded. So the bulb will glow if connect accross
PHASE and NEUTRAL or PHASE and GROUND.
