Between Turbo alternator and Hydro alternator which one is
more difficult to cool and why?
Answer Posted / iamdon
Turbo alternators are more difficult to cool as explained
below.
Turbo alternators rotates at high speed(efficiency is high
at high speed) of 3000rpm or 1500rpm(obsolate now).
High speed of rotor limits the rotor construction as
cylindrical rotor having
LONG AXIAL LENGTH(many stages e.g, LP(Low Presuure),IP
(Intermediate Presuure) and HP(high Pressure) are employed
on common axis in case of turboalternator) and
SMALL ROTOR DIAMETER(economically suitable to house only 2
or 4 rotor poles).
Disadvantage from cooling point of view
1)There is no fanning action due to cylindrical rotor
construction.
2)There are small surface area available for direct heat
radiation.
3)Heat produced in the embadded portion of armature has to
travel a long axial distance to reach at the end for
dissipation.

why do motors burn out? I understand why adding parallel loads to a power source means more current moves through the circuit, and can destroy circuit elements by overheating.
